Nanjing (Central Hotel)

City: Nanjing
Province: Jiangsu
Month/Year of Travel: January 1997
Travel Route in China: Hong Kong to Guangzhou to Nanjing to Guangzhou to Hong Kong
Name of Hotel: Central Hotel
Comments about Hotel: Rooms equivalent to White Swan, Also, each floor had available hot water and towels for the asking anytime. In 1997, English-speaking staff was almost non-existent, even at lobby desk and especially hotel operators. Had a business center, where in-China travel could be arranged, probably has e-mail by now, in addition to fax service.
Office or Orphanage: Nanjing Children's Social Welfare Institute
Sights to See in this city: Walk out to Zhongshan (Ave.?) from hotel's front parking lot and turn right. Follow sidewalk up about a block or so and visit the very nice post office which sells many commemorative coins, postcards and stamps --- really cheap and special souvenirs and gifts for family. Also, be sure to go to the Nanjing Museum --- a cab ride away, but nearly empty on a Sunday and the two huge gift shop rooms had the nicest selection of items we saw anywhere in China.
Baby supplies can be purchased at: Many formulas in hotel gift shop, but none same as sold in US. Didn't see diapers in hotel or on limited shopping - probably have them in hotel by this time.
Places to eat we liked: There is a very good lobby restaurant with buffet available most meals (English tent cards naming each item was very nice). I loved the Chinese restaurant on mezzanine, great dumplings and veggie dishes. Avoid the Western restaurant in hotel at all costs---very expensive and food is a very poor imitation of anything familiar.
Things you ought to know while staying here: They do expect you to bargain in gift shops etc, and will easily accept about half of marked price. Didn't buy much there since we thought there'd be so much more to choose from elsewhere, regretted it later.
