Nanchang (Gloria Plaza)

City: Nanchang
Province: Jiangxi
Month/Year of Travel: October 1999
Travel Route in China: Beijing to Nanchang to Guangzhou to Hong Kong
Name of Hotel: Gloria Plaza
Comments about Hotel: The Gloria Plaza is a very modern and comfortable hotel. The hotel features an informal coffee shop and two good restaurants - all of which are very good. The coffee shop features a breakfast buffet which is divided evenly between Western and Asian foods. A chef will also cook eggs or omelets to order. The rooms are comfortable and the staff was attentive and spoke English well enough to communicate. The hotel is located along the Gan river next to the Tengwang Pavilion. Shops and a medium size grocery store are within easy walking distance. Our only complaint was that Internet access was not available during the week we were there and nobody on the hotel staff seemed to have any explanation. Overall, however, we would recommend this hotel without reservation.
Office or Orphanage: Jiangxi Province Adoption Office
Sights to See in this city: Tengwang Pavilion, Jiangxi University, Porcelain Shops. Most adoption groups are also taken to see the village of Jian which is said to be typical of the type of village where babies are abandoned. The poverty of this village was significant but the people were happy to see us and the babies. We thought the tour of the village was one of the highlights of our trip. It helped us understand China's problems better than any amount of reading or discussion.
Baby supplies can be purchased at: A well-stocked grocery store is located about 6 blocks South of the hotel.
Places to eat we liked: We didn't get too adventurous and stuck with the hotel restaurants during our visit. The food was excellent and the service first rate.
Things you ought to know while staying here: Our group had a fair amount of unstructured time in Nanchang while waiting for the Chinese documents to be completed. By Thursday, we and the kids were bored. Our local guide (Mary) arranged for a bus tour to Lushan which had been described as a "Chinese Geneva." It is about 2.5 hours North of Nanchang and is very pretty. Everyone in our travel group elected to go and all of us really enjoyed the scenery and and the mountain air. Several of the babies really began to bond with their new parents on this trip.
