Flood Relief Programs for China

by Chuck Bouldin

As many of you know, China has recently experienced some of the worst flooding of the 20th century. There is considerable loss of life and great devastation to property, destruction of homes, farms and food. If you are interested in contributing to floo relief in China, here are several possible means to do so.

Mary Chamberlain and A-Parent-China Mailing List

Mary Chamberlain, who is the China program coordinator for World Child, is coordinating the collection of donations from adoptive parents. This started as a small campaign on the a-parents-china email list, but it has become quite large with almost 200 donors and over $7,000 collected so far. About September 1st, all the funds collected will be pooled and a single check, along with a list of all the donors, will be given to the China Adoption Center. Contributions can be sent to:

Mary Chamberlain
3244 Duck Pond Ct.
Herndon, VA 22071
(703) 264-7815

This is a private initiative started by Mary Chamberlain, not one affiliated with either FCC or World Child. This project arose from Mary's determination to do something to help the children hurt by the flooding, and a strong sense on the a-parent-china mailing list that adoptive parents should show their concern for the children who are still in Chinese orphanages.

Doctors without Borders

(Medecins sans Frontieres, MSF) is working in several disaster areas in China (see NYT, July 26, p. A-2). From a July 23 press release:"MSP has started distributing plastic sheeting, chlorine, and medical kits containing essential drugs and medical equipment to the local population...in total, 31 MSF volunteers currently work in five Chinese provinces, assisting victims of the recent floods. In Rongshui County (Guanxi)...more than 90,000 families have seen their homes covered by water. In addition, as many as 25,000 houses have collapsed, leaving some 50,000 people homeless." From a July 26 press update: "Mortality rates often increase considerably once floods have receded, and potential epidemics - including cholera and dysentery - are lurking everywhere right now, said MSF head of mission Geoffrey Prescott in Beijing."

People wanting to help can send a check to the NYC office, which will forward funds to China. Checks should be made out to Doctors without Borders. In the memo portion, please indicate that the money is for China flood relief.
